Michi Wiancko

Online

Internationally-acclaimed and multi-dimensional violinist, composer, and collaborator Michi Wiancko makes her solo debut in Portland with a one-woman show of new works written expressly for her by many of today’s most exciting composers. The carefully curated set list pays unique tribute to the long legacy of solo violin repertoire, ranging from old-school pyrotechnical virtuosity to sounds inhabiting the digital and mechanical world to heartfelt, gorgeous musical shapings.

In Paula Matthusen’s Dead Horse Bay, Michi weaves a gorgeous melody around sounds that Matthusen collected and recorded from from this historic New York waterfront, infamously littered with refuse from the 1950’s. Next up, Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 2, a devilishly difficult tribute to the great violin virtuoso Eugene Ysaÿe, and William Brittelle’s So Long Art Decade, dedicated to late pop icons David Bowie and Prince. Mark Danciger’s Skyline is a beautiful dream-like tribute to the solo violin works of J.S. Bach, and Christopher Adler’s Jolie Sphinx discovers deep humanity in robotics. Almost every work on this program will be a Maine premiere!
