Program II: French Evolution

Saturday, August 8 at 7:30 PM

Hannaford Hall, 88 Bedford St, Portland

This evening of music by French composers has a certain je ne sais quoi that extends beyond the national connection. Over the course of the program, the sound world opens with a single flute and gradually expands—adding voices and building up textures—leading up to a climactic conclusion with Fauré’s lushly gorgeous Second Piano Quartet.

Betsy Jolas Episode 1 for solo flute (1964)

Lili Boulanger Nocturne (1911) and D’un matin de printemps (1918) for flute and piano

Maurice Ravel Five Mélodies populaires grecques for baritone and harp

Camille Saint-Saëns Fantasie in A major, Op. 124 for violin and harp

Gabriel Fauré Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45
