Program III: The Kreutzer Affair

Thursday, August 13 at 7:30 PM

Hannaford Hall, 88 Bedford St, Portland

How did the name of a little known violinist become attached to three significant works of art? Beethoven dedicated his Violin Sonata No. 9 to Rudolphe Kreutzer. Tolstoy’s novella, involving a husband who becomes murderously obsessed with his wife’s musical connection with a handsome young violinist, in turn inspired Janacek’s String Quartet No. 1 which reflects on the obsessive qualities in Tolstoy’s dramatic story. Jealousy and murder, music and literature, all intertwine in this seamless, evening-length program culminating in ECCO’s doubly intense, double-quartet approach.
