| |
The purpose of the Portland Chamber Music Festival’s new Young Artist Apprentice Program is to engage Maine string students in chamber music of the highest caliber, and to provide an opportunity for an outstanding student to appear in a public performance with artists of international stature.
This program is open to all Maine students of high school age or younger.
The Portland Chamber Music Festival will hold its next Young Artist Apprentice Auditions in 2012. For more information, please contact Executive Director and Artistic Co-Director Jennifer Elowitch at (800) 320-0257 or via our contact page.
Portland Chamber Music Festival Young Artist Apprentice 2009
Violinist Sophie Davis
As the winner of PCMF’s inaugural Young Artist Apprentice Auditions, Sophie Davis of Waldoboro was the first high school student to appear at an evening concert in PCMF's sixteen year history. She was the second violinist in the Mendelssohn String Quintet in B flat, programmed in celebration of the composer's 200th birthday.
Sophie has played the violin for ten years. She studies with Gilda Joffe and plays in the Calliope String Quartet coached by cellist Marc Johnson, who performed with Sophie at these concerts. In 2006, her quartet won the Maine Student String Quartet Competition hosted by the LARK Society and in 2008 they won Bay Chamber Concert's Kathie and Marc Johnson Chamber Music Prize. Each summer, she participates in Kneisel Hall's Maine Young Musician Program and Bay Chamber Concert's Next Generation Program. When she is not performing, she loves to sail along the Maine coast, Nordic ski, and run. Sophie is a student at the Watershed School.
