The Portland Chamber Music Festival is pleased to announce its Fifth Annual Composers Competition.

Invited repertoire for 2010 includes works for String Trio (violin, viola, cello) or String Trio plus Oboe (oboe, violin, viola, cello).

2010 Competition Guidelines

Prize:

  • Performance at the 17th season of the Portland Chamber Music Festival in Maine at one of the following concerts: Thursday, August 12; Saturday, August 14; Thursday, August 19 or Saturday, August 21, 2010. 

    Performers at the 2009 Festival included current and former members of the Vermeer, Muir, Ridge, and Brentano Quartets and many other renowned chamber ensembles.


  • $1,000 cash prize

Who May Apply:

We welcome submissions from any composer, regardless of age or citizenship. The previous winners are ineligible.

Instrumentation/Length/Other Criteria:

  • Instrumentation for 2010 submissions is string trio (violin, viola, cello) or string trio plus oboe (oboe, violin, viola, cello). Limited electronics may be included at the discretion of the Artistic Directors.
  • Works must be no longer than 15 minutes.
  • Works may have been performed, but may not have won a prize in any previous competition in Maine or elsewhere. Commissioned works are permissible.
  • Works must have been composed in 2002 or later and may not include a conductor.
  • Judges will consider suitability for preparation and performance by a professional ensemble with one week of rehearsal.

Items for Submission:

  • One bound copy of score, submitted anonymously with no composer name or address visible on the cover page or elsewhere. Work title is permissible.
  • Live or MIDI recording (CDs only) submitted anonymously as described above.
  • A cover letter with contact information including name, street address, e-mail address, and one-paragraph biography.
  • If return of materials is desired, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope of appropriate size.
  • $20 application fee per score submitted (please make checks payable to PCMF).
  • All materials should be mailed to PCMF, 50 Market St. No. 137, South Portland, ME 04106.

Application Deadline and Notification:

All materials must be postmarked no later than Friday, February 5, 2010. PCMF will notify applicants of competition results by e-mail, no later than Friday, March 26, 2010. For questions, please call PCMF at (800) 320-0257 or contact us via out contact page.
